Asakusa is a major tourist destination, or one of popular ones, in Tokyo. Sensō-ji, Tokyo’s oldest and most significant Buddhist temple, is a popular destination in Asakusa.
To be honest, Asakusa was near the bottom of my list of places to visit in Tokyo because I felt like I’d already seen enough of it through travel websites and other people’s photos. 🫣 I decided to visit anyway so I could say, “Yeah, I’ve been there,” 🤭 and I didn’t want to spend a beautiful day staying at home.
とにかく (anyway), I really enjoyed my quick visit to Asakusa. Kaminarimon was an impressive sight to behold. Both the gate and its iconic giant lantern are much bigger than I had imagined. Nakamise-dori, the shopping street leading to Sensō-ji, is lined with shops that I wish I had more time to browse. Then again, that probably would’ve been dangerous for my wallet. 😂 I also came across several shops selling Shiba Inu-themed merchandise, and I kind of regret not bringing home at least one souvenir.

The jōkōro is used for a purification ritual before praying at Sensō-ji. Visitors “bathe” in the incense smoke over themselves, believing it cleanses negative energy, promotes good health, and helps heal ailments.

Tokyo Skytree from Asakusa
The Tokyo Skytree is quite visible and walkable from Asakusa. There may be several ways to reach it on foot, but one scenic route is via the Sumida River Walk, a pedestrian path that runs directly beneath the Tobu Line.
